Severe Hypertriglyceridemia: A 10-Year Review in a Portuguese Hospital

Introduction: Severe hypertriglyceridemia (SHTG) is a rare condition associated with serious complications, such as acute pancreatitis (AP), and the best treatment still matter of discussion. The aim this study to outline demographics, management, outcomes (recurrence mortality) complications in patients SHTG. Material methods: A retrospective, observational, analytical was carried out by obtaining clinical data from electronic health records SHTG admitted Internal Intensive Medicine units 1st January 2009 31st December 2020 university hospital. Results: cohort included 17 patients. most common complication AP (13/17 = 76.5%). Admission intensive care unit (ICU) observed 84.2%. Among AP, commonly administered therapies were insulin (82.4%) fibrates (76.5%). Plasmapheresis used 58.8%, criteria for using technique mainly based on laboratory abnormalities. There no deaths. readmission rate at 30 days 36.3%. Conclusion: This shows morbidity profile SHTG, high level ICU admissions also use plasmapheresis. In our population, approach had good results, should be highlighted there are clear international guidelines intervention. Distinguishing between familial chylomicronemia syndrome or multifactorial important recent specific therapy lipoprotein lipase (LPL) genetic deficit available. near future, performance considered an attempt avoid recurrence disease.
